Microbes

Microbes are the bacteria responsible for the digestion of nitrogen and phosphorus and for the sludge bulking and foaming in biological wastewater treatment processes. Research in the field of microbiology at the Advanced Wastewater Treatment Center (WWW) at the University of Queensland in Australia offers insights into the action of these microorganisms in the biological treatment process.

"To date, very little is known about the microorganisms that mediate nutrient removal in biological wastewater treatment processes. An insight into their identity, activity and biochemical pathways are critical for a basic understanding, and necessary for the efficient running and optimisation of this biological process". (Paul Burrell - Ph.D. Dissertation - WWW).

Hatano, et.al., have researched microbial populations and decomposition activity in three sub-surface flow constructed wetlands. (Hatano, K., C. C. Trettin, C. H. House, and A. G. Wollum, II. l993.)
